About the artworkBarbro Östlihn's oeuvre defies simplistic categorisation. It does not fit in with male-dominated minimalism, nor with pop art. Nor do its severe architectonic compositions match the forms of expression that were regarded as "feminine" in the 1960s and 1970s. The interpretations span from seeing veritable spiritual and existential qualities in her paintings, to discerning traces of eastern ornamentalism. Others experience her works as strict compositions radiating control and introversion. At around the time when Mary Magdalen was painted, Östlihn took part in the Pop Art exhibition at the Hayward Gallery in London, and created the diptych The Cold War, which shows two rifle cartridges, one from the USA and one from the USSR.
