About the artworkConstantin Brancusi is among the most influential regenerators of plastic art in the 1900s. In his quest for the inner essence of things, he reduced form to the limit of total abstraction. In his portrait of James Joyce (1882-1941), author of "Ulysses" and "Finnegans Wake", Brancusi has radically simplified the shapes. The spiral is a geometric figure that is used in many cultures to symbolise creation and the cyclical nature of life.
