About the artworkThe design of Martha Rosler's photo installation suggests the pared-down aesthetics and strict grids of American minimalism. In Rosler's case, however, the geometric shapes of male minimalism are infused with a captivating story of a young woman who finally stands on her own two feet. The mother-daughter relationship and the identity-building aspects of shoes and clothes are key ingredients in this work from 1973. Many of Rosler's works can be described as being critical of society. She reveals power structures in the public domain and how they affect our everyday lives. She often focuses on women's experiences in modern life.
