About the artworkMachinery and vehicles feature frequently in Truls Melin’s art, and his sculptures set the imagination going. “Candidate” could be a crashed model airplane, but the fuselage and front are contained in a box, so it is hard to tell. This could be a disaster scene, but nothing is certain – Melin often delves into layers of meanings and inverts events, as a form of rehabilitation. He seeks to destabilise. The work may resemble a gigantic toy, but the artist says his intention was to cover up violence. Painting every part of the sculpture the same colour – a characteristic trait of Melin’s oeuvre – refers to the attempts to hush things up, a tendency that is especially pronounced in Swedish society, according to Melin: painting over the cracks.
