About the artworkGalina Moskaleva’s photographic series was made ten years after the Chernobyl disaster in the former Soviet Union (1986), which led to many cases of cancer caused by the radiation that leaked from the nuclear reactor. The photographs show children from the Chernobyl region in what is now Ukraine, who have undergone surgery for thyroid cancer, an unusual condition in minors. Our eyes are drawn to the scars on their throats, signs of the incurable disease. The artist’s portraits of each individual reveal their respective personalities, their hopes and their longings. The contrast between hope and sorrow is painful to witness.
