About the artworkGrande Figure is a bronze sculpture that resembles a three-dimensional drawing. Its shadow becomes an integral part of the work. Throughout his life, Alberto Giacometti wrestled with a persistent sense of failure. Whether sculpting, drawing, or painting, he always strove to depict reality as it actually appears to the eye – yet he was never truly satisfied. After the Second World War, his sculptures grew larger in scale, characterised by their slender forms and large, heavy feet. The war and the horrors of concentration camps lent his work a chilling relevance. Despite their weathered and worn appearance, the figures exude poise and dignity.
