About the artworkAt first we see only a chaos of leaves and branches reaching in from the left. Gradually, however, the picture grows clearer. Fruits, possibly bunches of plums, appear. Then we make out a woman by a fence, through the foliage. Ragnar Sandberg worked on this painting periodically between 1938 and 1960. He captures a moment and conveys a feeling of peaceful simplicity, a life far from the concerns of our time. At first sight, this is an idyllic scene that exudes sun and summer. But as we regard the painting, the subject is pushed to the side by an uncompromising interest in the intrinsic language of painting.
