About the artworkLotte Jacobi once said: “I was born to make photographs.” In 1840 her great-grandfather purchased the equipment and the rights to make daguerreotypes from Jacques Daguerre himself. The profession passed from one generation to the next, and Jacobi’s grandfather, father, uncles and aunts, and sister were all photographers. In 1935 she emigrated with her sister to the United States, and together they opened a photography studio in New York. There she made portraits that included many of the celebrities of the day. Here we see the actor Peter Lorre, who fled Nazi Germany in 1933 and later made a career in American films, including Casablanca (1942). Lotte Lenya was married to the composer Kurt Weil and participated in the premiere of The Threepenny Opera in 1928.
