About the artworkÖyvind Fahlström’s imagery combines pop and conceptual art with an urgent message. Unlike the cool pop artists, Fahlström was “hot”, as the American artist Mike Kelley once wrote. Fahlström dealt with global politics in comic-strip illustrations, happenings, poetry and installations. He wanted his images to be reproduced in large editions, far from the fetishist approach to art. In The Little General, French president Charles de Gaulle is separated from his nose. Together with various additional unattached limbs, revolutionary Che Guevara, an anonymous and present-day coiffed, crucified male person, a sickle without its hammer, and other silhouettes, the figures resemble the obstacles in a pinball machine.
