About the artworkJoseph Cornell is best known for his collages of found objects. Here, fragments of the adventure film Escape from Borneo (1931) are assembled into a new stand-alone work – an avant-garde art film. Influenced by Surrealist ideas, he added new music and projected the film at a slower pace through blue glass, creating a dreamlike atmosphere. Cornell was fascinated by the exotic Borneo settings and perhaps most of all by the lead actress, Rose Hobart – his compilation film is effectively a tribute to and portrait of her. At the film’s premiere, Salvador Dalí is said to have been furious that Cornell had anticipated ideas about the film collage, ideas that he himself had wanted to be the first to realise.
