About the artworkIn her self-portrait with palette Helene Schjerfbeck is looking down and to the left, probably into a mirror. Her expression is both empty and sunk in her work. Her right eyebrow is raised, perhaps unconsciously, in a concentrated look that has been smoothed out and frozen into a mask. This is not a flattering portrait. The strong expression of feelings is communicated with restraint. When she painted this portrait in 1937 she was over 70 years old. She returns to a self-portrait from 1915, which she had since varied on several occasions. The dark and the light areas in the background presumably represent the wall and the ceiling. We perceive in this self-portrait, in the rounding of the eye sockets, a stylisation that approaches abstraction.
