About the artworkIn Dick Bengtsson's world there is no escape. He leads our gaze to the cracks in the façade of the modern project and the ideological underbelly of rationalist society. In the diptych Hat and Wig Factory, everything is reversed, with one exception - the swastika remains the same, regardless of world order. The surface treatment is characteristic for Dick Bengtsson's works. To achieve and "old master" and intentionally dirty patina, he often coated his paintings with layer upon layer of varnish, before treating them harshly with a hot iron, as though to eliminate every trace of brush strokes. The resulting painting was flat as an oil print, with a dream-like detachment, like a picture of a picture.
