About the artworkIn the 1950s, the Egyptian artist Tahia Halim developed her own style, which has been called folkloric impressionism. Halim, who studied in Cairo and in post-war Paris, is strongly influenced by older Egyptian art and culture – especially rural aesthetic styles that were considered authentic and “primordial”. But her oeuvre also has obvious parallels with 20th century European painting. The pieces from Tahia Halim’s impressionist period are usually simple and poetic, with balanced compositions, tentative brushwork and expressive colours.
