About the artworkInfluenced by Paul Cézanne (1839-1906), Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and Fernand Léger began to reduce and fragment objects, people, places and landscapes into geometric forms. They disregarded the rules of perspective that give a picture the illusion of depth and that had prevailed in art since the 13th century. In Cubism, everything unfolds in two dimensions. Picasso took it a step further in this piece, through the use of material that is flat by nature to create tridimensional forms. From printed newspaper pages, he formed a bottle, a glass and a violin – a still life that is also a collage. The idea of using an everyday object like a daily newspaper (journal in French) as material in an artwork was also a novelty at the time.
