About the artworkIn the summer of 1909, Georges Braque made five paintings of the castle in La Roche-Guyon, a small town, a few miles outside Paris. Inspired by Paul Cézanne, who had been widely celebrated with retrospective exhibitions in Paris two years before, Braque composed his images architectonically with geometric, prism-like segments. With a subdued palette, Braque gradually allowed colours and shapes to separate. In the years that followed, Braque continued, in close dialogue with Pablo Picasso, to reduce his colours to nuances of brown, grey and ochre – so as not to be distracted from his focus on form. Here, however, in the painting of the castle in La Roche-Guyon, we see his first steps towards what would later become known as analytical cubism.
