About the artworkThe car has always been both an object of fascination and a status symbol in modern society. James Rosenquist worked as a billboard and sign painter when he was younger and he liked to use the techniques he learnt then in his art. In I love You with My Ford he combines several large images with unconnected motifs – the radiator of a Ford, a woman in profile and canned spaghetti– into one huge painting. He found the material for the various parts in advertisements in Life magazine from the 1950s. The combination evokes associations with an American drive-in cinema and Rosenquist’s paintings are formally typical of Pop Art. They can also be seen as a critique of the emerging consumer society of the 1960s.
