About the artworkA photogram is a photographic image made without a camera. The objects in this picture have been placed on a photosensitive paper and then exposed to light. The result is a silhouette image, where the blackness varies depending on the transparency of the object. The glasses in this picture are almost invisible, but their rims and engraved patterns appear distinctly, along with the piece of cutlery. Avant-garde dada artists and Russian constructivists often experimented with photograms around the time of the Russian Revolution. The artist’s parents, Alexander Rodchenko and Varvara Stepanova, were both leading constructivists.
