About the artworkOtto G. Carlsund went to Paris to study at the Académie Moderne, where the artist Fernand Léger encouraged his students to create compositions based on the rhythm and innate energy of shapes. Carlsund met the pioneer of modern architecture, Le Corbusier, who had been commissioned to design a movie palace in Paris and asked Carlsund to do a wall decor for the foyer. The result was nine panels with motifs from the world of cinema at the time, such as musicians in the orchestra pit and a projectionist. The guitar player was a draft painting, made on a baking tray during a visit to his grandmother in a village near Vichy – Carlsund’s mother was french. The series of figures consists of flat colour fields envisioned to meld into a totality with the architecture if the project had been implemented.
