About the artworkIn an intense pink light, a few people have gathered on a jetty for an early morning swim in the nude. Colour, light and shade are the main elements, as so often in Sandberg’s works from the 1930s. Both the vibrant colours – inspired by the French painter Pierre Bonnard – and the Swedish west coast setting, are typical of the so-called Gothenburg Colourists, such as Ivan Ivarson and Åke Göransson. In light, shimmering, momentary images they portrayed street life and leisure. In the 1940s, Sandberg’s palette was subdued and his compositions grew more geometric. Between 1947 and 1958, Sandberg was a professor at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm.
