About the artworkNils von Dardel not only introduced Rolf de Maré, founder of Les Ballets Suédois in Paris, to Jean Börlin in the 1910s, but also designed the stage sets for one of Börlin's dance soirées in 1918. In this painting Dardel combines his fascination for Siam and Eastern art with Russian ballet, which Börlin had studied under the choreographer Michel Fokine. In the painting, Dardel has captured Börlin in a pose from Siamese Dance, also known as the Heavenly Dance. He contrasts the premiere dancer Börlin in his golden costume against sky-blue - the Buddha figures floating on little clouds in the background enhance the dancer's body control.
