About the artworkThis is a rather unconventional self-portrait by Ivan Lönnberg. Like a slim but muscular youth, he stands naked in the middle of the picture, alone in the room. His skin is luminous in the otherwise twilight blue studio in Paris. His vulnerable nudity and athleticism evoke Eugène Jansson's studies of athletes from the turn of the century. But there is also a mystical element in this painting. On the table is a black top hat. The artist's pose is self-conscious, slightly dancing and almost coquettish. But who is he really? At the outbreak of the First World War Ivan Lönnberg enlisted in the French army. In 1918, he died at the front.
