About the artworkGösta Adrian-Nilsson (GAN) was a trailblazer who constantly explored new expressions and was inspired by Cubism, Expressionism and Dadaism. Between 1920 and 1925 he lived in Paris and was influenced by artists such as Fernand Léger. During this period, he immersed himself in purely abstract geometric forms and wrote The Divine Geometry (1922), in which he explained his artistic philosophy. GAN’s increasingly non-figurative style was coloured in the 1930s by his rapprochement with Surrealism. Woman at the Mirror reflects this blend of geometry, symbolism and abstraction and captures his transition from structured forms to expressive, emotionally powerful compositions. In Sweden, his personal contacts with the Surrealist group and brief period in Surrealist painting would prove to be a crucial influence for the Halmstad group.
