About the artworkOn a red floor, in a room with one dark yellow and one green wall, stands Munch's friend, the Danish poet Helge Rode (1870-1937), with shiny shoes and arms crossed. The dazzling colours are applied with the flowing brush strokes characteristic of Munch's paintings in the early 1900s. Munch's earlier portraits were painted in the symbolist style, with dark colours and nervous lines. He travelled extensively and mixed in the fashionable circles of artists and intellectuals in 1890s Paris and Berlin. Munch wanted to reach a wide audience and therefore developed his graphic skills, particularly in woodcuts.
