About the artworkIn the 1930s, surrealist René Magritte posed questions relating to how we view the relationship between language, image and reality. Ceci n'est pas une pipe, he captioned a painting that portrayed - a pipe. Isolating and analysing words and phrases was later to become a standard element of conceptual art, in which depiction and meaning were seen as more important than form or sensory perception. This became the "art that studied itself," in which the boundaries between art and theory became blurred. Kosuth's enlargements of dictionary definitions relating to art have become an icon of conceptual art.
