About the artworkIn a black line drawing on a white background, three figures appear here in a close but contactless relationship. The motif has been interpreted as the portrayal of a personal triangle drama. Two figures tumble around in symbiosis, caught in an emotional storm. A third is watching them from the outside, with his back to us and his hand resting in the foreground. At the time, Picasso was married to the Russian ballerina Olga Chochlova, but had been in a parallel relationship with Marie-Thérèse Walter since 1927. Around 1930–1932, the artist and his wife are described as a couple on the verge of a breakdown, locked in a destructive relationship. During the late 1920s and 1930s, Picasso’s work increasingly explored the inner, irrational forces of life and was influenced by the Surrealist movement.
