About the artworkIn the 1970s, Barbro Östlihn worked on a series of paintings she called the Wall series, where all the works have approximately the same format. Surface and image, foreground and background, now merge in an increasingly abstract style of painting. The often cold colour scheme and the lack of depth are compensated by the fascinating shifts in colour. Her notebooks contain meticulous notes on addresses and other information about the facades, along with the photos on which the compositions were based. But New York was a transforming city. Barbro Östlihn photographed, went home and painted, and when she returned the house had often been demolished. "I feel like the angel of destruction!" the artist wrote in a letter home.
