About the artworkEdith Fischerström worked in 1939 on her large, black and white woodcuts of the Gothenburg harbour and Götaverken, the world’s largest shipyard at the time. She produced powerful and evocative renderings of the harbour’s bustle of boats, factories and huge cranes, which epitomized the city. The shipyard closed long ago, the large docks were sold and filled in, and only a few of the cranes were salvaged, as landmarks. In her dramatic, dark woodcuts with sharp angles and contrasts, Fischerström intimates the lull before the storm; the Second World War was looming. Edith Fischerström was born in Stockholm. She studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and was both a painter and printmaker. She is best known for her portraits, but she also painted and drew landscapes and made woodcuts of city views.
