About the artworkWhile in the USA, Jan Håfström created a few paintings with simple compositions and subdued colours, inspired partly by one of the giants of American art - Barnett Newman. Håfström's oeuvre has many facets. He juxtaposes the personal and the general, the past and the present, and creates a weave of references to comic book heroes and palaeontological finds. Long Island was painted after a trip from New York to Arizona and back. The elongated shape reflects the nature of the journey, according to the artist. The colours are warm and the composition is obviously horizontal, like an island or a section of earth sediments. Perhaps we can also trace influences from Robert Smithson, another recurring reference in Håfström's work.
