About the artworkLars Millhagen arranges sculptural clashes between strictly geometric and more organic shapes, combining wood, rope, stone and other natural materials, such as twigs, fabric, straw and soil. A couple of visits to Japan around 1970 inspired him to work with new expressions and materials. The terse, subtle Japanese imagery impressed him deeply, along with the ritualised relationship between nature and culture that is so strongly aestheticised in Japanese culture. The large jointed wooden sculpture is closely related to Japanese clothing. Spread out on the floor, the sculpture has a kimono shape that is partially fragmented when it is suspended from the ceiling.
