About the artworkYves Klein’s monochrome paintings initially met with strong scepticism in 1950s Europe. Instead of brushes he used a roller, and he was considered to have more in common with house painters than with artists. Klein believed that the essence of art lay in colour, and especially in blue. He applied for a patent on the intense, deep blue IKB, International Klein Blue, a colour with a new binder that he developed himself. IKB left the surface of the painting matte like velvet and the grainy pigment appears to be a powder on the canvas. Klein’s first monochromes were completely flat. Later, he created reliefs by attaching different-sized sponges soaked in IKB to the canvases, as in this work from 1960.
