About the artworkMarcel Duchamp had caused a stir with his cubist-oriented "Nude Descending a Staircase" in 1912, before giving up painting and detaching himself from art movements. Original and copy are ambiguous concepts in relation to Duchamp: most of his works are replicas and reconstructions made according to his consultation and signed by him. This snow shovel is an example of what he called readymades – everyday objects that are transformed into art by the context in which they are seen. The title about the broken arm demonstrates how Duchamp played with words and phenomena. The surrealists were quick to acknowledge Duchamp, and he has had a profound and controversial influence on art movements and artists over the years. His ideas are as central to conceptualism as they are to pop art and postmodernism.
