About the artworkIn his art, Carlos Capelán draws on a wide range of techniques to convey ideas that cannot easily be put into words. Figures, quotations, thought bubbles, carvings and the colours of nature come together in the work Northern Lights, Southern Cross. Here, the canvas becomes a space for exploring and questioning the narratives and systems that often dominate our understanding of the world. Capelán's exploration is rooted in his experience of leaving his homeland of Uruguay in the 1970s to go into exile, and later living and working in other countries, including Sweden. It was here that he developed a keen interest in colonial theories, and quickly moved away from Eurocentric perspectives. Since then, his artistic practice has been characterised by an ongoing desire to explore and challenge questions relating to belonging, movement and language, and the limitless possibilities of knowledge.
