About the artworkBuilding a stable cairn is both a ritual and a balancing act. Rose B. Simpson's sculpture depicts a woman with a small child sitting on her shoulders. Through its title, the work alludes to a kind of cairn. The woman's upper body is separated from her lower body and has no arms. Between the two parts rests a rounded form, perhaps a stone, which links them together. Without the interaction between the mother and child the balance would be upset. Having children means constantly seeking balance between parenthood and life's other roles. Simpson sees her sculptures as tools for healing the wounds caused by objectification and stereotyping, issues which she, like many others, have had to endure.
