About the artworkLeif Holmstrand’s work often comes from the performative. The sculpture Line and Assault was first conceived as props for a performance. ʻʻOne idea was to sing yourself hoarse in front of the sculpture, another was to use it as a ritual wand. Informal and ceremonial mini-happenings were staged with the sculpture as a hub,” says the artist. As in many previous works, Holmstrand plays on the tension between his own handicraft and prefabricated objects. And in the result, neither the eerie nor the comic is rarely far away. In Holmstrand's artistry and writing, a variety of materials and forms of expression are combined. Through them, a motley world emerges, populated by crossgender characters who explore the conditions of human life and the subversive power of culture.
