About the artworkClosing your eyes is an effective way of making yourself unavailable and connecting with your inner self. In an age that values productivity and consumption, sleep is provocatively useless. Faces from the past appear as silent witnesses in Visiting Calm Waters, where Cecilia Germain portrays her ancestors in the blues of cyanotype and watercolour. Germain’s roots lie in the African diaspora born out of the transatlantic slave trade, a trade that enabled white people to rest and relax at the expense of other people’s lives. Her work connects
with the individual and collective right to rest and recovery, where sleep is a symbol of anti-capitalist politics.
