About the artworkMuhammad Ali draws innumerable ink figures that together form a dense shape. They are barely distinguishable from each other but have mutated into something else. The characters are hybrids, part human, beast, and insect. They offer pictures of everyday life in Ali’s native Damascus. With impressions from his walks through the war-torn capital, Ali portrays the social disintegration of Syria. Gone are the legends and stories of heroism, and the people only have warped memories of their former lives. Instead, Ali shows us narratives about survival, sometimes through a life of fraud, lies, and hate. The figures swarm and form groups, without getting to know or protecting each other.
