About the artworkIn 2018, Sam Hultin began working on a monument to Eva-Lisa Bengtson (1932–2018), a trans pioneer who paved the way for an entire movement that had once excluded her. Her story cuts straight through ever-urgent issues of inclusion and exclusion in feminist discourse. Here, the invisible experiences were invited to an open forum – the public space. With archive material and city walks, gatherings and essay films – traditional methods of public education – repressed stories are brought into the open, along with norm-breaking community. The city walk Eva-Lisa’s Room, which is reconstructed according to Hultin’s script, stops off at important meeting places in Eva-Lisa’s life in Stockholm: The Lesbian Front’s premises on Hallandsgatan, Kvinnohuset on Blekingegatan, Jerry’s ladies’ club on Folkungagatan and Transvestia’s premises on Östgötagatan.
