About the artworkIn the dystopian industrial landscape in the background smoking chimneys stand out against a smog-filled sky with no horizon. The glossy colour photo of a dancing couple seems stuck to the canvas with yellowing adhesive tape, like memories of another, lost world. Teresa Wennberg is regarded as a pioneer in Swedish video and media art; her works on issues such as identity, gender and language became internationally famous in the 1980s and 1990s. As a young painter, Wennberg belonged to the circle around Salvador and Gala Dalí, but later migrated towards 1970s hyperrealism and social activism. The layers of mediated images in this painting seem to presage later video works with advanced effects such as chroma key, or the striated realities of virtual realities.
