About the artworkWhat memories can and may images hold? The photograph of a savannah on fire is from a collection of glass negatives documenting the Swedish mission’s activities in then Belgian Congo in 1890–1930. The same picture was used by the Mission Covenant Church of Sweden in a dramatically tinted version aimed at spreading the notion of Africa as a dangerous and unenlightened continent. Here, the original negative has been carefully enlarged to a monumental format that opens for other narratives – of resistance, or environmental destruction and ravaging in the wake of colonialism. The work is part of the project Les Archives Suédoises, where Anna Ekman and Cecilia Järdemar have also collaborated with the Congolese sculptor Freddie Tsimba with the aim of highlighting such narratives that challenge the established historiography of the missionary field.
