About the artworkThe photographic series In Bed relates to our need for intimacy. In these prosperous times, we often live apart; children sleep in their own rooms, the elderly and single live alone. But close contact with other mammals gives a sense of wellbeing that resembles human interaction. These intimate pictures were taken in families that Lisa Strömbeck knows well. Mammals has a political dimension. To suckle one’s offspring should be the right of all mammals, not just humans. Strömbeck has been an animal rights activist ever since she grew up on a small farm with livestock. The animals were her best friends and offered the physical presence and tenderness that others did not always have time to give her.
