About the artworkThis series consists of eight hand-coloured black-and-white photographs. The subject matter is from a market in Sheki, Azerbaijan, a place that has been a centre of trade along the Silk Road since the Middle Ages. At night, the tradesmen protected their goods by wrapping them in various kinds of cloth. In the weak light, they resembled bodies, and Helena Wikström photographed hundreds of these sculptural formations. Wikström usually works alone, but she also collaborates with others and often studies historical events and persons in depth. With their pale colours, the body formations in Sheki are enigmatic and evoke the many stories relating to the network of roads and places that arose between China and Europe for the trade with silk, gold and spices.
