About the artworkIs there a limit to how much we can remember? Ferdinand Evaldsson struggles with amnesia, and time-consuming craftsmanship is also a form of mnemonic process for him. The basic structure of Memory Palace II is from the 16th-century mystic Giordano Bruno’s sketches for a so-called memory palace, a mnemonic technique where inner images are positioned in a mental building. This method was used by Catholic monks in the late middle ages and the renaissance. The idea was to reconstruct personal and collective memories all the way back to the moment they were created. The ornamental relief is laboriously built using techniques that Evaldsson learned when studying to be an icon painter. The relief is full of symbolism that has been lost to most of us in some sense, but is valuable nevertheless.
