About the artworkAt the tender age of 19, Gittan Jönsson came to Stockholm to study at the Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts and Design. This was around 1969, and the school was characterised by a political spirit and the conviction that the world was facing radical change and the imminent downfall of capitalism. Being an art student in those days had a profound influence on Jönsson, who developed an imagery over time that consolidates social and poetic aspects. Since the 1970s, Jönsson has been a seminal figure in feminist art in Sweden. This is a painting of her studio in Berlin, the city she moved to in 2010 to live and work. Here, the artist sits looking at paintings at different stages, including this one, in a kind of meta-gesture! Outside the window, in another layer of reality, we see a tiny speck, an airplane that is about to land on the now-closed Berlin Tegel Airport.
