About the artworkAmina, dressed in a cleaning smock and headscarf, is vacuuming. Through her recurring depictions of women vacuuming in drawings, paintings and sculptures, Gittan Jönsson has made visible a typically female chore that has rarely been depicted in art. Throughout her artistic career, she has drawn on personal experience without confining herself to the autobiographical. She has consistently chosen to highlight the collective experience of women, and her work serves as a critical commentary on how societal norms shape our perceptions of gender and work. Her vacuum cleaning women are both a tribute to the invisible work that many women do and a challenge to the roles still attributed to women.
