About the artworkThe script for the video work One Big Bag is based on interviews and workshops that Every Ocean Hughes attended together with several death doulas from different cultural backgrounds. The visual structure and narrative motor consist of a “mobile kit for after-death care”, a bag with ordinary items that the doula can use to care for the recently deceased.  The actor is factual and physically intense, guiding the viewer through the various largely unexplored aspects of after-death care – practically, politically and spiritually. The video format generates a tension between the death ritual it portrays and the actual performance.
