About the artworkIn the wintery mountain landscape portrayed in appliqué with deft stitches, a Laestadian funeral procession approaches the cemetery’s modest crosses. The dead are lain to rest here – the most pious in pale clothes, some under warming rugs. The Voyage II is part of a series of works portraying Britta Marakatt-Labba’s childhood experience of losing her father. Life goes on after death, the five-year-old imagines, with card games, reading and curiosity about everything that happens above, among the still-living. But a ladder down into the open grave leads our eyes to the unimaginable, macabre recent past: skulls stolen for the State Institute for Racial Biology in Uppsala. Marakatt-Labba is a sensitive, multifaceted narrator, whose embroideries, watercolours and installations convey a Sami world of ideas.
