Lena Cronqvist’s artistic career spans more than six decades and covers many different materials and techniques. Girls and women are one of her most common motifs. The grimacing, defiant and sullen girls in her paintings and sculptures counterbalance the often-reproduced image of the compliant and graceful woman. In Girl and Tiger (Sun and Moon), woven and plant-dyed by Cronqvist, a naked, pregnant woman is petting a tiger with a bowed head. In the sky above, the sun and the moon are visible. The roundness of the heavenly spheres is echoed in the uterus which is visible through the belly. Perspective shifts between micro- and macrocosm, in- and outside.
