About the artworkLike a shadow theatre, paper figures are transformed into moving images. These figures perform an ever-changing choreography that is both automated and random. Almost all of the materials used in the work were already present in the artist's studio, with only the motors being purchased new. The soundtrack accompanying the animation is a mix of songs from old vinyl records that have been waiting a long time to be used. Jockum Nordström's imagery features characters that appear to have emerged from folk art and broadsheets, existing beyond time and space. The shadow play is projected onto a paper screen that resembles a poor man's stained-glass window. The back of the installation can be viewed from the adjacent room through an opening in the wall. This reveals the fragile stage machinery, consisting of metal wire, rotors and coloured lights.
