About the artworkJimmie Durham was a poet, sculptor and activist whose practice reflects on the history of oppression and the meaninglessness of violence. He parodied and challenged stereotypes relating to indigenous Americans, even after his self-claimed cultural identity as a Cherokee was questioned and criticized. "My ambition in life is to become a homeless orphan," he said, "to be in a state where I am not faithful to the past." Durham often used text and maps in his works. This is a description of an urban plan that could be said to reflect such postcolonial, social issues he was actively involved in. But a map can never represent more than itself, the artist points out, and urges us to constantly question things.
