About the artworkThroughout his artistic practice, Martin Gustavsson has explored the roots of homophobia in our time from different angles. In the same way that an individual’s identity can be both accepting and self-censoring, his paintings are in dialogue with each other about various aspects of homoeroticism. His double-sided paintings and title of the work relate to a scene in Jean Genet’s film "Un chant d’amour", where two men share a cigarette across a prison wall. The title means "Scarlet Song" and comes from a novel by Mariama Bâ about passionate love, which the artist read at the time when the works were being exhibited in Dakar, Senegal, where homosexuality has been forced underground.
